A “no-stress” trip to Korea What we used this time was AeroK, an LCC that flies directly from Kansai International Airport to Cheongju International Airport. Because it was during the summer vacation period, I had braced myself for some congestion, but I cleared security in no time and headed to the departure area. I boarded from the satellite of Terminal 1 by airport shuttle, and at last departed for Korea. Because Cheongju International Airport is also a military-civilian shared airport, I could not take photos from the airplane, but thanks to the K-pop that played loudly after landing, I was greeted with a high-energy arrival. Because there are still few foreign travelers, immigration is incredibly fast! While there were many people lined up in the Korean passport inspection line, there was almost no waiting time on the foreigner side. From getting off the plane, I was able to finish the inspection in about 5 minutes. From Cheongju International Airport, the sightseeing circular route bus “C Tour Bus,” which connects KTX Osong Station, Gongju Intercity Bus Terminal, and Buyeo Intercity Bus Terminal, operates four round trips a day. Until now, public transportation required transfers, but if you use the “C Tour Bus,” you can access Buyeo and Gongju directly from Cheongju Airport without transferring. To a famous local gourmet restaurant beloved in Cheongju About 30 minutes after being rocked by a local bus from the airport, I first headed to the famous restaurant “Bongyong Bulgogi (봉용불고기),” beloved by locals. Pigeons and sparrows were also spending their time freely, and it felt less like a tourist spot and more like I was visiting “the everyday life of this city.” When I passed through the park, I arrived at another Cheongju specialty, “Jjoljjol Hotteok (쫄쫄호떡).” This hotteok has an outer coating that is crispy, almost like tanghulu (fruit candy) or crème brûlée, and the moment you bite into it, sweet syrup oozes out! From comfortable shopping to finding your “favorite” Less than two hours after arrival, I had already eaten so much that I decided to stroll around the city to digest. Seongan-gil, lined with fashion and cosmetics shops, has an atmosphere like Myeongdong, but is free from crowds and extremely comfortable. The huge two-floor Olive Young also has an excellent selection, and there is zero waiting time at the register! It was nice to be able to shop while looking carefully at the products. The first floor displays cosmetics, perfumes, and pop-up spaces, while the second floor displays skincare, health & beauty, and food items, and it was spacious and very easy to see. There were also about six self-checkout machines, and of course tax-free shopping was possible. When you leave Seongan-gil, an area lined with Korean-style sensibility cafes and variety shops appears. First, I went to the cafe “hopehood (홉후드),” which I had found on Instagram and had been curious about. Although it was sold out that day, cherry choco and fruit sandwiches are also popular items at this shop. It used beans from “HOCUS POCUS ROASTERS,” a popular cafe in Pyeongtaek, and it was a cup that felt carefully crafted, with a solid weight yet an easy-to-drink fruity aftertaste. Then, I decided to hop between variety shops on the same street. The first place I visited was “HOUSE RULES (하우스룰스).” Interior goods, character merchandise, apparel, and tableware—inside the stylish shop, where the scent of nag champa drifted through the air, there were rows of items that made my heart flutter just by looking at them. Next, I visited “ROWEATHER (로웨더),” which has an abundance of cute small items! Its feature is a lovely selection ranging from character goods to apparel. There were many cute items such as ribbons and headbands, and it also had a rich selection of materials for the ballpoint-pen decoration that is currently popular in Korea. Finally, I visited “PIECES OF HAUS (집의조각들),” a shop where you take off your shoes before entering. When I opened the door with the cute phrase, “It’s a showroom like a home♪” and “Welcome to our home~,” a space unfolded that really felt like visiting a stylish friend’s house. The shop displays works by Korean artists, domestic tea bags, imported goods, and more, and because it was the time when the sunset was shining in, the emotional atmosphere was doubled, which left a strong impression. Since the samgyeopsal I ate at lunch was still sitting heavily in my stomach, I sadly gave up on dinner. Instead, I decided to eat dessert while enjoying the night view. To conclude the first day, I went to Suamgol, which is also famous as a filming location for the drama “Bread, Love and Dreams.” It is an area on a hill, and as you climb the slope, stylish cafes appear one after another. Among them, I visited “OHJI (오지),” which stood out especially. The second floor has indoor and terrace seating, the third floor has indoor seating only, and the fourth floor is all terrace seating. From the glass-walled interior and terrace seats, you can overlook the cityscape of Cheongju and the beautiful night view, and in the distance you can also see airplanes taking off and landing at the airport. Inside the shop, there are delicious-looking pastries and desserts lined up, and you pick them yourself and pay at the register. Apparently, BTS’s RM has also visited, and the menu he ordered was introduced next to the register (he ordered a decaf flat white, chocolate salt bread, and an an-butter croissant taiyaki). At a window seat on the second floor, I sipped a decaf latte and ate a Lotus donut while vaguely gazing at the night view. Couples on dates, families, people enjoying cafe time alone... each spent time as they wished. Since it is open until 0:50 the next day, it is quite excellent as a night cafe. The parking lot is also large, and it seemed that many people came by private car. If you go by bus, you have to walk more than 15 minutes from the nearest bus stop, and there are also steep slopes, so in summer or on days with bad weather, it is recommended not to push yourself and to use a taxi. Since the roads are not as congested as in Seoul, even during commuting hours it moved relatively smoothly, and I arrived in about 40 minutes. From Osong Station, I took the KTX and reached Daejeon Station in about 20 minutes. What I hurried to was the super-famous bakery “Sungsimdang (성심당),” which is listed in the Michelin Guide and is swarmed by bread lovers from all over Korea. When you come up to street level from Jungangno Station on Daejeon Subway Line 1, it is like a theme park. First, the “Sungsimdang Cake Boutique” that comes into view has a long line! Because the giant cake series “Sil,” which uses strawberries, mangoes, and other fruits lavishly, is popular, people were coming out of the store one after another carrying large cake bags. Ignoring that, I proceeded along “Sungsimdang Street” and quickly arrived at the main store! When I visited around 8:30 in the morning, about five groups were lined up, but because the turnover was fast, I was able to enter with almost no waiting time (when I returned again after 10:00, there was a huge line...!). Inside the store, it was packed with bread lovers of all ages and genders, and the style was to move along with the flow and pick up bread. There were dozens of kinds of bread lined up, from baguettes and focaccia to side-dish breads and pastries! And as expected, the most popular is the signature “Ttigeum Soboro (fried soboro) bread”! The moment freshly made ones are placed in front of the store, almost everyone takes one. By the way, when Japanese people hear “soboro,” they tend to think of minced meat, but this “soboro” is cookie dough crumbled into soboro-like pieces, and it is sweet and has a crunchy texture. I bought Ttigeum Soboro bread, Tiseoguma (soboro bread with sweet potato filling), Volcano (cheese bread), and salt bread at the main store. In the basement of the main store there is also a sandwich specialty shop. They sold jambon-beurre, yakisoba bread, fruit sandwiches, and more, and I got a croissant sandwich with arugula there. I carried the bread and ate breakfast at the nearby “Sungsimdang Culture Center.” The “Sungsimdang Culture Center” is about 30 seconds on foot from the main store. Here, if you order a drink, you can eat bread and cake purchased at “Sungsimdang” in the cafe space inside the store. The basement 1st floor through the 2nd floor are cafe spaces, and the 3rd through 5th floors are pop-up spaces and museums. On the 1st floor, original goods of cute characters such as eco bags and mascot key chains are also on sale. Sitting on a seat on the basement 1st floor, I took a bite of the croissant sandwich with an iced latte. The combination of a croissant with a faint buttery aroma, refreshing arugula, ham, tomato, and cheese. The Caesar-style dressing was an accent, and although it was filling, I finished it without getting bored until the end. Of course, I also tried the specialty Ttigeum Soboro bread. On the outside of the chewy, moist bread, the soboro was crunchy and crispy! The sweet red bean paste inside was not too sweet, and even though it was fried, it was easy to keep eating, and I understood why it is so popular. Tiseoguma is packed tightly with koguma (sweet potato) paste inside, giving it a flavor different from Ttigeum Soboro bread. Volcano is a soft bread filled generously with Emmental cheese and Camembert cheese, and it is very heavy and satisfying! The salt bread was orthodox, but the butter and saltiness that seep out were irresistible. Also enjoyed the specialty kalguksu What I was just as curious about in Daejeon as the bread was the official mascot character “Kumdori.” It was born from the “Daejeon International Expo (Daejeon Expo)” held in 1993, and it is said to have regained popularity among the younger generation after being recently renewed. My eyes met Kumdori, lined up in the window of the variety shop “SDOT” just a short distance from the “Sungsimdang Culture Center,” and I was drawn inside. Stickers, key chains, giant plush toys, stationery... everything was cute, and the “rarity” of being able to get them only here made me loosen my purse strings before I knew it. In Daejeon, various cafes apparently make desserts modeled after Kumdori, but this time I could not eat them because of time constraints... I will definitely note that down as homework for next time. After leaving “Sungsimdang Street,” I crossed the main road and strolled around the area of Daehung-dong, where cafes and restaurants line the streets. I headed to the hot bakery “Mongsim (몽심),” but there were already more than 180 groups waiting (more than 120 minutes of waiting time)! I did register, but unfortunately I had to give up because I would not make it back in time for my return KTX. With lingering regret, I thought that since I had come all the way to Daejeon, I should eat kalguksu, so I went to “Boksu Bunsik (복수분식).” It is a famous shop that has appeared on television several times, and its signature dishes are kalguksu and tofu tteulgi (stir-fried simmered dish seasoned with a sweet and spicy sauce). I ordered the specialty Orkuni Kalguksu (spicy kalguksu), with extra cheese and reduced spiciness. What surprised me first was the amount of crown daisy! The red soup was topped with a generous amount of crown daisy, making a strong impression. Because it had little of the astringency or bitterness like Hakata crown daisy, it was a good accent. The noodles were smoother and softer than udon, and the soup was about as spicy as Shin Ramyun. The thick soup melted with cheese, making for a very addictive taste. After eating the kalguksu, on the way to the station I happened to discover the popular bakery cafe “PIE GARDEN.” I can almost hear voices saying, “Still eating bread?” but since I came to Daejeon, I had to stop by! Inside the spacious shop, delicious-looking bread, centered on pastries, was lined up. In particular, I bought an egg tart that even the driver of the famous “bread taxi” in Daejeon recommends. They put it in a cooler bag, and I decided to eat it at the airport on the way back. It was so surprisingly delicious that I regretted not buying other breads too... Since the time for the KTX was approaching, I returned to Daejeon Station. Compared with large stores such as Seoul Station, there seemed to be fewer items aimed at tourists, but since all the trendy and standard products were available, there was no trouble at all shopping. Rather, the lack of crowds made it attractive because I could choose slowly. I bought souvenirs here, organized my luggage, and then took a local bus to Cheongju International Airport. After being rocked by the bus for 30 minutes, I arrived at the airport. Since the airport itself is in the city, convenience is excellent, and it is a very welcome point for people who want to play until the last minute or pack their schedule tightly. Even after arriving at Cheongju International Airport, everything was astonishingly smooth. There was no line for check-in, no line for security, and it was extremely comfortable. By the way, there are also several restaurants inside the airport. Before security, there is “No Brand Burger” and the ice cream house “BEURRE BEURRE,” and after security there is the cafe “A TWOSOME PLACE,” so you can spend a relaxed time until boarding. The plane departed and arrived on time, and perhaps because the timing was good even after arriving at Kansai, there was almost no line at the baggage claim.
