They continued, 'After the first verse sung by several upper voices, the second verse sung by tenor Sebastian Blount features a surprising modulation from A-flat major to E major. The final verse settles in D-flat major, which is our favorite key.' Francesco Tristano explained his choice of 'The Friendly Beasts', saying, 'When I wanted to return to the origins of the carol, a song from 13th century France caught my attention.' He added, 'That song became known as 'The Friendly Beasts' in the 19th century and has been covered by many artists including Harry Belafonte, Johnny Cash, and Sufjan Stevens since the 20th century. In my version, I incorporated the atmosphere of medieval church modes while adding solemn harmonies typical of Christmas carols.'
