“Korea travel = Seoul” alone is a waste! If you extend your trip a little, there are many charms you still do not know, such as history and culture unique to Korea, and local gourmet food loved by local people. This time, starting from Daegu International Airport, we go on a 3-night, 4-day trip around Andong and Gyeongju in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Daegu city. We actually experienced by the Kstyle editorial department a “slightly deep Korea trip” that is a little different from Seoul, such as touching traditional Korean culture in a World Heritage village, walking on a bridge with beautiful night views, and eating and walking around at spots that are a hot topic on social media. Table of contents [DAY1] ① About 1.5 hours by bus from the airport! To Andong, a town where tradition lives and breathes ② Savor local cuisine! A quiet and luxurious “self-care trip” [DAY1] A trip starting from Daegu International Airport, healing with Korean tradition and night views About 1.5 hours by bus from the airport! To Andong, a town where tradition lives and breathes This time, we head to Daegu using T’way Air (renamed “Trinity Air” from September 10). After about 1 hour and 40 minutes of direct flight from Kansai International Airport, we arrive at Daegu International Airport! Since Daegu is considered “one of the major cities representing Korea,” there were some users from Japan and from inside and outside the country. The foreigner-only lane for immigration was only one lane, but this time we passed through in about 10 to 15 minutes. We were also able to receive checked baggage relatively smoothly. After leaving the airport, we took a city bus to Dongdaegu Terminal. Depending on the bus, there was space to place luggage, so even with a large carry case it was reassuring. Getting off at the “Dongdaegu Station Underground Passage” stop, and going up the escalator, KTX Dongdaegu Station comes into view. While passing through inside and following the guidance signs toward Exit 2, the entrance to the bus terminal is next to Shinsegae Department Store. Going inside and then to the ticket counter on the 3rd floor, you can purchase a ticket by selecting your destination on a kiosk. It is a touch-panel system, and it can be set to Japanese display, so even if you do not understand Korean, it is reassuring. You can specify the destination and seat, and pay by cash or credit card. This time, we are heading to Andong, a city of culture and tradition. Since the bus platform for Andong is on the 4th floor, go up one floor and head to the platform. By the way, inside the terminal there are convenience stores and cafes such as Gong Cha, so it is convenient for filling up before boarding the bus. Not all buses are like this, but there are cases where you open the trunk yourself and load your carry case, so please be careful! It is reassuring to check the guidance of people around you and the driver before boarding. After putting in the luggage, tap the barcode on the ticket against the reader and then board. From Dongdaegu to Andong, it is about 1.5 hours by bus. The roads were not congested, so the move was smooth. Savor local cuisine! The comfort of “staying like living” in a hanok stay After arriving in Andong, transfer to a city bus and head to the lodging. This time’s accommodation is a whole house for private rental, with the atmosphere of a Korean traditional building, a hanok. When we went inside, it was a simple and comfortable space with a Scandinavian feel while retaining the taste of a hanok. It is equipped with a washing machine and kitchen, so it seems good for long-term stays. By the way, of course it has air conditioning, and it also has ondol functionality, so it seemed like we could spend winter trips to Korea warmly. You can definitely experience a winter that is a little different from Japanese floor heating. It was so comfortable that I almost thought, “Maybe I do not need to go out today...” (laughs). But I was hungry, so for dinner I headed to the so-called “Andong Market Jjimdak Street” in Andong Old Market, looking for Andong’s representative local dish. There are about 30 jjimdak specialty shops lined up here. Jjimdak is a local specialty of Andong, made by simmering chicken and vegetables with soy sauce and sugar as a base, plus chili peppers, and it became nationally famous in the 2000s. This time we visited “Yeongga Jjimdak.” Two people ordered one chicken of jjimdak (medium size). It also said the spiciness could be chosen, so we made it a little milder than Shin Ramyun. The jjimdak that arrived was clearly very filling! In addition to chicken pieces of various parts, it had plenty of chewy dangmyeon (sweet potato starch glass noodles), lots of potatoes, and plenty of ingredients such as cabbage, green onion, and carrot. The chicken is springy, and it is nice that you can enjoy collagen and cartilage too. The sweet-and-spicy sauce is soaked into the vegetables as well, and the more you eat, the more you can feel the sweetness of the vegetables. Occasionally, while eating pickled radish to refresh the mouth and soften the spiciness, and enjoying it with beer, it becomes a blissful moment. If you come to Andong, this is a local gourmet dish you should eat at least once. This is a 387 m long bridge that opened in 2003, and it is also known as a filming location for the Korean drama “Touch Your Heart,” the movie “Brother,” and the popular variety show “I Am SOLO.” Walking on the bridge lit by lanterns, it feels as if you have stepped into a scene from a drama, with a romantic atmosphere. Not only couples, but also families and friends visit, and in the quietness, they slowly enjoy the night view. As you walk across the bridge, what appears near the center is the large illuminated pavilion, Wolyeongjeong. As expected from being selected as one of the “30 most beautiful views in Korea,” the bridge and pavilion reflected on the water are also fantastical, and it is so beautiful that you want to take photos. In addition, there are moon-shaped boats on the river, gently rocking. The boats, lit by changing lights, moving across the water also become an accent in the night view and create photogenic moments. There are cafes and such in the surrounding area, so it is recommended to spend a relaxed time while looking at the night view. The mood, as if I had wandered into the world of the Korean drama “Love in the Moonlight,” completely healed the fatigue of the trip. Wolyeonggyo Bridge (월영교) 569 Sangah-dong, Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do >> Naver Map [DAY2] Go to UNESCO World Heritage Andong Hahoe Village! Experience Korean traditional culture Time-slip to old Korea! Refresh surrounded by nature On the second day, we went to Andong Hahoe Village, which was registered in 2010 as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site as part of the “Historic Villages of Korea,” together with Yangdong Village in Gyeongju. Originally, we should have taken the main line bus No. 210, which goes directly to the site, but the timing did not work out, so we took bus No. 211 to the “Jungni” stop and then transferred to a taxi. This is a point to note! It is recommended to allow plenty of time, because you may not be able to catch the bus at the time you had checked in advance. This time, there happened to be a taxi nearby, but according to the driver, sometimes they cannot be caught, so try to use bus No. 210 as much as possible! We arrived around 9:40, first stored our luggage in the free coin lockers, and paid the admission fee. Adults are 5,000 won per person, and from there we took the free shuttle bus to the village. Early in the morning there are relatively few people, so it is recommended because you can sightsee slowly. Around 11:00, the number of tourists increased considerably. Rental bicycles are also available, and if you go around the village, you can return within an hour. There are some slopes, so it seems like a bit of physical strength is needed, but there are electric bicycles and tandem types too, so it seems good to enjoy touring with a group. When you enter the village, the beautiful Nakdong River flows on the right, and beyond it rises Buyongdae. Walking along the path where a cool breeze passes through the trees, the old-style settlement gradually appears. There are houses with tiled roofs and houses with thatched roofs. Many of them are actually still lived in, and there are also shops selling local goods and snacks. Even though it is a tourist destination, people’s lives still breathe there. That atmosphere may be the unique charm of Hahoe Village. While walking through the village, we found a huge swing at the “Folk Play Yard”! Surprised by its size, the editorial team also tried riding it. Because the rope was quite long and it had been since childhood that I had been on a swing, I almost got motion sickness (laughs). Even so, in front of us stretched the green Manseongjeong forest, and beyond that the beautiful Nakdong River. Slowly swinging in nature and taking deep breaths became a healing time that made me forget everyday life. Truly a power spot! A “miracle village” where many cultural heritages remain While strolling through the settlement, we arrived at Samsindang in the center of the village. There we encountered a large zelkova tree that is said to be over 600 years old. It stands in the center of the village as a sacred tree believed to protect fertility, childbirth, and children’s growth. There was also a place where you could write a wish and tie it up, so the editorial team also wrote one with feeling. There is somehow a clear air here, and I felt as if I had received good luck, with my mind and body purified. Not only history, but also this kind of “power spot” enjoyment is what makes Hahoe Village interesting. In Hahoe Village, various cultural heritages remain, such as Yangjindang, built on the site where Ryu Jong-hye first settled when he entered Hahoe Village in the 15th century, and Chunghyodang, the clan house of Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong (a prime minister of the Joseon Dynasty). Currently, in this area there are many cultural heritages such as national treasures, treasures, historic sites, national folk cultural heritage, national intangible cultural heritage, natural monuments, and cultural heritages designated by Gyeongsangbuk-do. You can actually walk and experience the old Korean traditional houses and the living culture that has been passed down there. As a place that conveys a long history to the present, I hope it will continue to be carefully preserved. After going around the village, I got hungry, so I went to Hahoe Market. Among the restaurants and souvenir shops, this time I had the famous salted mackerel set meal at Hahoe Folk Restaurant. “Why is salted mackerel a specialty in Andong, which has no sea?” Many people may think that. In fact, there is a history unique to Andong behind this. In the past, people used to carry mackerel on foot from Yeongdeok on the east coast of Gyeongsangbuk-do to Andong. During that time, excess moisture was removed, the flesh tightened, and the umami increased, and then when it arrived in Andong, a salting craftsman called “gangchabi” rubbed salt evenly into the mackerel, which is said to have led to today’s Andong salted mackerel. When I actually ate it, it had just the right amount of saltiness and went well with rice! The mackerel was crispy and fragrant on the outside, and fluffy when grilled on the inside. It had just the right amount of fat and the umami was tightly concentrated. The siraegi soup and the various banchan served with it also matched the salted mackerel perfectly, though simple. It was a dish that let me taste Andong’s unique food culture. After lunch, since there was still some time before the bus, I went to the free-entry Hahoe World Mask Museum, about one minute on foot from Hahoe Market. It exhibits many masks and costumes from Korea and the world, including masks used in the Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori, one of the representative performances of Korean traditional mask dance “talchum,” which was registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2022. Korean masks are made using paper, wood, gourds, and so on, and you can actually pick them up and look at them. And outside the museum there is also a “Hahoe 4-cut,” not just “Life 4-cut”! For 5,000 won per session, there are cosplay goods such as traditional hats of kings and military officers that you can wear for photos. Since we had come this far, the editorial team also took one as a souvenir. To Gyeongju, where “the city itself is a World Heritage site” Leaving Hahoe Village, we took a bus to Andong Station. Although this day was planned as a stay in Daegu, we had a little time, so we decided to make a detour to the currently popular Gyeongju. From Andong to Gyeongju, it is about 45 minutes by KTX-EUM. It was so quick that I thought, “Already?” At Gyeongju Station, we left our luggage in a locker and transferred to a city bus to head to the currently attracting attention “Hwangnidan-gil.” Gyeongju is a city where many historical heritages from the Silla period remain, including Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto, Yangdong Village, and the “Gyeongju Historic Areas.” What is interesting and attracting attention is that “modernity” such as cafes, accessory shops, and eat-and-walk gourmet food is fused into such a historic city. The representative area is Hwangnidan-gil. It is right next to the “Wolseong District” and “Daereungwon District” among the five historic districts, and is a popular spot where history and trends intersect. Right beside the main street, the Daereungwon district spreads out. It is a place where as many as 23 tombs gather, including Hwangnam Daechong and Cheonmachong, whose interior is open to the public. While looking at such historical scenery, you can also enjoy eating and walking around Hwangnidan-gil. There are many tempting foods such as Korean traditional snack “chondeugi,” the 10-won bread with stretchy cheese that is also popular in Japan, and cup mulhoe with yukhoe on top. Among them, the one that is getting attention is Gyeongju face bread! Four pieces cost 8,500 won, and you can enjoy two flavors, black sesame and sweet potato. It is nice that you can buy it at a kiosk, so there is little waiting time. It is also recommended to take photos that are very Gyeongju-like together with the Buddha statue of Seokguram and the Gyeongju face bread modeled after the human-faced roof tile called the “smile of Silla.” While walking along the main street, the editorial team found corn ice cream from “Hwangnam Oksusu.” With the first bite, it is like cold corn soup. As you keep eating, lightly butter-flavored corn kernels appear from inside! The sweet-and-salty taste is addictive, and I kept eating. Hwangnidan-gil also has many accessory shops. Magnets, postcards, snow globes, aroma stones, and other local goods full of Gyeongju love are lined up in each shop. What especially caught my eye were Gyeongju T-shirts using photos and illustrations of Buddha statues. They are not only unique and cute, but just wearing them somehow seems to raise your luck...! And then, I found the “lucky turtle” that is trending in Korea recently! Each color has a different meaning, and you choose a turtle in the color that matches your wish, such as love, health, or money luck, and attach it to your smartphone case or carry it in a small zipper case to bring good fortune. At the miscellaneous goods shop “SSUK SSUK,” there were turtles in two sizes, but the editorial team chose a very small turtle. After much deliberation, we welcomed three turtles: blue and purple, which seem to grant wishes in general, and yellow-green, which is said to cut off bad energy. Three cost 2,000 won, so they are perfect as souvenirs. In addition, Gyeongju also has an official Miffy store. There are goods you can only find here, such as local Miffy modeled after the Buddha statue of Seokguram and barley bread. You end up loosening your purse strings for limited goods that can only be bought while traveling. After looking around the main street, when we entered the side streets, restaurants lined the atmospheric alleys. For dinner, we went to the highly rated Korean restaurant “Hyanghwajeong” in Hwangnidan-gil. This time’s target was yukhoe mulhoe (cold raw beef and sashimi soup). Fresh yukhoe is thoroughly coated with a sesame-oil-based sauce, broken up in a sherbet-like soup, and eaten with pear and cucumber. The combination of the melting umami of the yukhoe and the cold, refreshing soup is exquisite! The seafood pancake we ordered together was packed with plump shrimp. It was fried crispy and was not greasy, so we finished it deliciously to the end. After enjoying the meal, we took the bus to the KTX station. From Gyeongju to Dongdaegu, it is about 20 minutes. We arrived in no time, and this day we stayed at a hotel in Daegu. Markets, shopping, and pilgrimage to sacred sites Stroll through markets and the city center! Fully enjoy real Korea On the third day, we leisurely strolled around Daegu city. Up to this point in the trip, we had fully enjoyed Korean traditional culture, but from here on we decided to enjoy Korea’s “now.” First, from morning coffee. We headed to BomBom, a cafe chain originating in Daegu. There are two stores around the hotel where we stayed, and since they open from 8:30 a.m., they are easy for students and office workers to use. BomBom started in 2012 as a takeout-only cafe, and its differentiated menu, reasonable prices, generous portions, and refreshing atmosphere made it popular, and by 2025 the number of stores had expanded to over 530. The menu is rich, including coffee, ade, and tea, and sizes are offered in three types: tall, big, and liter. Since we had come this far, we ordered a liter-size cold brew latte... and it was simply huge!!! Since it is of course 1 liter, it is big enough to get tired holding it with one hand (laughs). The price is also reasonable, so it seems good as a companion for study or work. After finishing getting ready with coffee in hand, we next headed to Seomun Market. Despite being a weekday, it was crowded with many people. Not only foods such as sundae, tteokbokki, dakgangjeong, peanut bread, and Korean fish cake, but also clothing, bedding, and even oriental medicine such as ginseng—literally everything is available. While walking through the market, the editorial team also got exfoliating towels and floral work pants. We found cool but cute items that are unique to the market. And when you come to a market, of course you have to eat and walk around! We went to “Misungdang,” which is reputed by word of mouth to be delicious. What we had here was Daegu’s representative gourmet food, napjak mandu (flat fried dumplings). Inside the dumpling skin there is only a little glass noodle and green onion, and it is a fragrant, well-fried dish. Unlike ordinary dumplings, it is not packed with filling, and has a light, simple taste. It is good with soy sauce, or dipped in tteokbokki sauce. The tteokbokki we ordered together was not too spicy, and the rice cakes were chewy, making it excellent as well. I ended up eating it like a snack. Even BTS members! To places associated with a legendary Korean singer After enjoying the market, we headed to a spot that BTS fans should not miss. First, we went to Daesong Elementary School, about a 10-minute walk from the market. It is known as V’s alma mater, and the entire outer wall of the school is covered with murals sent by fans. In addition to support messages written in various languages such as Japanese, Korean, and English, there are fan art and discography of V. It has become a spot where fans will want to take photos. Daegu is also famous as the hometown of BTS’s SUGA. At Myeongdeok Station, three stops by monorail from Seomun Market, there is a mural of SUGA. Right after exiting the station, SUGA appears in multiple places, from the wall of a convenience store to the wall of a restaurant and the outer wall of a gas station! While taking commemorative photos, local citizens passing by also stopped, and it was a moment when I felt the warmth of the local people. After leaving the “ARMY holy land,” we headed to “Kim Gwang-seok-gil.” It is a street themed around the life and music of Kim Gwang-seok, one of Korea’s representative singers, and is lined with murals and photo spots. While enjoying a walk through the city, we had a slightly late lunch. After that, we took a break at the stylish cafe “koku.” The interior is divided into two floors, and the high ceiling and large windows create a wonderful sense of openness. Since “dessert has a separate stomach,” we even had a cake packed with figs that are in season now, and relaxed for a while. From the giant coffee in the morning to the cafe time after walking around, we also enjoyed Daegu’s everyday life with cafes. After the coffee break, we strolled and shopped along Dongseong-ro, Daegu’s representative downtown area. Since Olive Young and Sanrio were collaborating at the time, we immediately went inside. The store is spacious, and because it is not as crowded as Seoul, shopping is very easy! Unfortunately, the local Kitty charms were sold out, but thinking “Maybe items sold out in Seoul are still left in Daegu?” gives hope for shopping in local areas. Also, within walking distance from Dongseong-ro there is Lotte Department Store at Daegu Station, and Hyundai Department Store at Banwoldang Station, so it is convenient for brand shopping and looking for souvenirs. Challenge Daegu’s unique gourmet food On the last night, we challenged a Daegu specialty we had really wanted to eat! We headed to Wang Geomi Restaurant, a local favorite. It is a very local-feeling restaurant that has often been introduced on TV programs and such. As soon as we entered, we ordered Daegu’s specialty, muntigi (beef sashimi). Muntigi uses beef within 24 hours of slaughter. It was selected as one of the “Daegu 10 flavors” and is loved locally. After a while, a dish piled high with reddish meat was brought to the table! I was surprised by the meat, which was so heavy and moist that it did not fall even if the plate was turned upside down. The texture is chewy, a little like horse meat, with a pleasant bite and delicious! The meat itself has no unpleasant smell, and you eat it dipped in a sauce made with sesame oil, red chili pepper, garlic, and so on. This... makes you want to drink alcohol!!! It is also recommended to enjoy changing flavors by combining it with the spicy bean sprouts in the banchan or dipping it in doenjang. One dish is quite filling, and it was a very satisfying first muntigi. My stomach was quite full. But since I had come to Daegu... the editorial team got greedy. “I cannot go home without eating makchang!” So, in order to challenge makchang at the very end, we headed to “Maksamga,” famous among locals. Honestly, I thought, “Maybe I cannot eat any more...” but the crispy grilled makchang was surprisingly not greasy, and had the lightness of a snack. In a soybean-paste-based sauce with moderate saltiness and sweetness, add green onions and green chili peppers as you like, and then dip the makchang in it. This also makes you want to drink alcohol (part 2)! Since it is brought already cooked in the kitchen, there is no smell, and it seems easy to eat even for first-timers. The steamed egg served as a service has plenty of broth and a fluffy, gentle taste. On the other hand, the tteokbokki is quite spicy, so be careful! The pepper heat hits hard, and in my feeling it may be spicier than Buldak... The kimchi mari guksu ordered at the end is a simple dish with somen noodles in sherbet-like kimchi soup. After eating makchang, it was refreshing and excellent. We enjoyed it thoroughly until the last day, and the next day we returned home on an early morning flight. The flight to Kansai International Airport departs at 8:00 a.m. Since the airport itself is in the city, it takes about 30 minutes by taxi, and check-in is less crowded than at Seoul airports, so even with an early morning flight you should be able to depart without rushing. From streets where the breath of tradition can be felt to local areas packed with trends, it was a very satisfying 3-night, 4-day trip that filled both the heart and the stomach. A quiet and luxurious “self-care trip” From Daegu, to Andong, Gyeongju, and back to Daegu. In Andong, which we visited this time, we walked through a World Heritage village and were soothed by the green forest and the murmuring Nakdong River. Also, while looking at the fantastical illumination of Wolyeonggyo Bridge, we slowly loosened the fatigue of everyday life. We entrusted our wishes to a sacred tree over 600 years old and immersed ourselves in a slightly mysterious world, took deep breaths in nature, and savored local dishes that can only be tasted there. And in Gyeongju and Daegu, we also fully enjoyed trending gourmet food, cafes, shopping, and fandom activities. The fun of a trip around the provinces is that you can also enjoy Korea’s “now” properly. Rather than packing your schedule full of lively and glittering tourist spots, you can step a little away from the bustle of the city, be surrounded by nature, and reset your mind and body. You can do such an “adult detox trip” in Korea too. What I realized through this trip is that “the provinces = a little inconvenient” is not true; rather, there is Korea that you can only encounter because it is the provinces. Another charm of a provincial trip is that you can feel more closely the lives of the people in the town and the culture rooted in that land. If you think, “I have been a little tired lately, so I want to slowly indulge myself,” or “If I am going to go, I want to encounter scenery and experiences I have never seen on social media,” then please go beyond Seoul. While encountering Korea you do not yet know, refresh yourself as well. Why not make your next trip a slightly luxurious “self-care trip” as a reward to yourself who is working hard?
