Cha Ga-won, the representative of One Hundred, who is under suspicion of fraud on a scale of 30 billion won (about 3 billion yen), was detained and indicted. Today (the 26th), the Organized Crime Investigation Division of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office detained and indicted Representative Cha Ga-won the previous day on suspicion of fraud under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes. Representative Cha Ga-won is suspected of proposing a business using the intellectual property rights (IP) of affiliated artists, receiving a large advance payment, and then failing to carry out the contract terms, and of entering into jeonse (a uniquely Korean deposit-only housing lease system) contracts on houses owned by himself and an acquaintance, receiving a deposit of 5.4 billion won (about 570 million yen), and then failing to carry out the contracts. The total amount of damage identified by the police is said to amount to about 30 billion won. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Financial Crime Investigation Unit had grasped the situation that Representative Cha Ga-won was trying to run off with a large amount of money, and applied for an arrest warrant twice in June, but the prosecution rejected both times, requesting supplementary investigation. After conducting additional investigations such as account tracing and analysis of contractual relationships, the police applied for a third arrest warrant against Representative Cha Ga-won on the 22nd of last month, and the prosecution accepted this and requested it from the court. The Seoul Central District Court issued an arrest warrant on the 3rd of this month, citing a risk of destruction of evidence.
