Rumors of death regarding Chris, a former member of EXO and a Chinese-Canadian, have spread. Local Chinese media and police have denied the reports, stating 'it is completely untrue,' but confusion continues due to the repeatedly surfacing provocative rumors. Recently, some Taiwanese media reported 'rumors that Chris died while serving his sentence.' According to this, an anonymous SNS user claiming to be a 'fellow inmate' asserted that '(Chris) was killed because he could not meet the demands of the group leader,' which has expanded the controversy. Furthermore, unverified rumors have spread, claiming 'he died due to a long hunger strike weakening his body,' 'he was eliminated for refusing the secret rules of the powerful,' and 'he was involved with the daughter of high-ranking officials and lost his life.' Additionally, following reports that four Canadian criminals were executed in China, some internet users claimed that Chris was included in that list. These rumors are being re-disseminated with repetition, distortion, and speculation. However, Chinese media and police immediately rebutted. Local Chinese media stated, 'The death rumor about Chris is already fake news that has been raised three times,' and pointed out that the recently spread 'body photo' is a composite photo with only the face swapped. The Jiangsu Provincial Public Security also clarified through their official SNS that 'the photos circulating online are fabricated' and called for restraint in spreading rumors. Chris debuted as a member of EXO in 2012 and filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment in 2014 to confirm the non-existence of the exclusive contract, subsequently developing his career in China. He was detained in 2021 due to allegations of sexual assault against minors. During the investigation, multiple victim testimonies continued, and in 2022, the Chaoyang Court in Beijing sentenced him to 11 years and 6 months for rape and 1 year and 10 months for group obscenity, totaling 13 years. After the appeal was dismissed, the sentence was confirmed as is. After serving his sentence, he is expected to be deported to Canada.
