On December 15, 2025, the 8-member girl group GPP from SM ENTERTAINMENT JAPAN held the 'GPP Debut Showcase Live' at EBIS303 in Tokyo, the night before their major debut. GPP is the first girl group composed entirely of Japanese members, managed by SM ENTERTAINMENT JAPAN, which has managed the Japanese activities of global artists such as BoA, TVXQ, SHINee, Girls' Generation, EXO, Red Velvet, NCT, aespa, and RIIZE. The group consists of 8 members with various backgrounds, including famous audition program graduates, top dancers, actresses, and models, and is produced by Sim Jae-eun, the first performance director from Korea, and Jay Kim from the Korean rock band TRAX. The 8 members, who gathered through scouting, have undergone rigorous training for a year and a half in Korea. Their journey has been gradually attracting public attention through the documentary program 'GPP Fly: The Takeoff of the Paper Airplane on the Edge,' which has been airing on Fuji TV, and excerpts from the documentary have been streamed on YouTube. Finally, the day of their unveiling arrived. The stage was set in the center of the venue, surrounded by about 500 audience members. The front row was only about a meter away from the stage, making for a very close live performance. As the venue darkened, a preview video of their debut single 'Bring it Back,' released the day before, played on the front monitor, and the 8 members quietly appeared from the back of the floor. When they took the stage, loud applause and cheers erupted from the audience, indicating that GPP was already establishing a fan base. The first voice heard was the soaring vocal of HONOKA, who took the lead, accompanied by the lovely chorus of all members. The singing gradually transformed into a calm choir that boldly sampled The Beatles' 'Yesterday.' The live performance began with a gentle start, which was somewhat unexpected based on prior expectations. The first song performed was 'Bring it Back,' but it was not the original version; instead, it was a boldly arranged R&B version. The audience was captivated, swaying and watching the mature and soothing song. The 8 members frequently changed their focus, delivering a vibrant performance to all 360 degrees of the audience. After the gentle beginning, an intense dance break was showcased, and the floor quickly heated up. The next song, 'Buzz Down,' utilized the wide stage, maintaining the energy from the previous dance break, showcasing a powerful performance typical of SM ENTERTAINMENT, which elevated the groove in the venue. During the MC segment, each member introduced themselves, delved into the origin of the group name, and shared their 'limit-breaking episodes' in a friendly atmosphere. The lively talk of the 8 members was a stark contrast to the intense performance earlier, showcasing their versatility. The next song performed was 'MAYOIBOSHI,' currently the only ballad for GPP, where each member resonated their beautiful voices, allowing the audience to listen closely to the lyrics, which gently encourage them. One of the features of GPP's live performance might be the drastic changes between calm and dynamic. After the ballad, another intense song began, with members showcasing their rap skills. The powerful and sharp rap combined with a vigorous dance performance further raised the energy in the venue. This song was also a hip-hop arrangement of 'Bring it Back,' but it sounded so different that one might not recognize it as the same song without being told. The arrangement's breadth was impressive. Instead of presenting the debut song straightforwardly, they showcased various arranged versions beforehand, which felt playful and confident. It seemed to hint that for them, debuting was just a stepping stone, and they had much more in store for the future. The next song, 'Motivation,' included lyrics co-written by HONOKA, expressing their determination to move forward despite pain. The dance expressing their genuine feelings showcased the beautiful interplay of the 8 members. The dance break named 'Time Break' was so intense and complex that one might question where the 'break' was, with so much movement that many audience members gasped. The main set concluded with 'Bring it Back,' where the full scope of the debut song was finally revealed. The song, which fuses various genres like drum and bass, EDM, and dubstep, naturally led to a whirlwind of performances. Utilizing various singing methods such as R&B and rap, the intense floor dance made one wonder how they could sing while moving like that, and the audience erupted in cheers for the performance that seemed to condense the day's content into one song. After the main set ended and the venue darkened, the monitor at the front displayed the world premiere of the 'Bring it Back' music video. After the MV, which focused on the members' intense and intricate dance, ended, the 8 members appeared on stage again. The encore was a second performance of 'Bring it Back,' but this time it was presented facing the opposite direction from the main set, and filming was allowed, prompting smartphones to be raised from all over the floor. Thus, the GPP debut eve live ended with great excitement. The athletic and intricate dance, the complex structure, the diverse and high vocal abilities, genre-less songs that cannot be easily categorized as K-POP or J-POP, and the wide range of expressive techniques, along with the unique characters of each of the 8 members, raised expectations for their future activities. This showcase proved their abilities, living up to the rumors of 'world-class' standards. On December 16, 2025, their 1st digital single 'Bring it Back' was released. The song, which fuses various genres like drum and bass, EDM, dubstep, urban, and hip-hop, offers a grand worldview, and its avant-garde sound, along with lyrics that express the strong determination of the 8 GPP members to face and overcome any challenges, are noteworthy. Simultaneously with the digital release of 'Bring it Back,' the music video was also released on the GPP Official YouTube channel. The dynamic dance performance, which seems to gather and explode diverse energies, along with the seamless movements of the mega crew, including the 8 members' avatars, and the dynamic camera work utilizing robotic arms, create a stunning performance video that strongly showcases GPP's identity.
In November, notable events in Korean entertainment included the debut of Japan's all-Japanese group GPP, BLACKPINK's Lisa being considered for a role in a live-action 'Rapunzel', and 2PM's Taecyeon announcing his marriage to a non-celebrity. Additionally, NiziU's Nina faced dating rumors, which were denied by her agency.
