A malicious internet user A, who has continued unfounded defamation and threats against IU, has been given a suspended prison sentence by the court. Yesterday (10th), according to the legal community, Chief Judge Chang Seong-jin of the Seoul Central District Court's Criminal Division 21 sentenced A to 10 months in prison with a 2-year probation for charges of defamation, insult, and violation of the stalking punishment law. Investigations revealed that A posted false content 29 times on his blog from May to July last year, claiming 'IU is a spy' and 'Chinese spy IU.' There were also delusional defamations such as 'her private life is chaotic,' 'she belongs to a criminal organization,' and 'she committed murder.' When IU's agency, EDAM Entertainment, filed a lawsuit, A sent threatening messages to the company's email, stating 'I will kill you' and 'I can no longer live,' increasing the anxiety. The court stated, 'Repeatedly spreading false facts in a space viewed by many and threatening the victim caused extreme fear,' and judged the crime to be serious. However, it was considered that A has been diagnosed with a mental illness and has been receiving treatment since high school, and that his previous offenses were limited to a fine. However, the court pointed out that there was no agreement with the victim. The prosecution is appealing the first trial's sentence as being too lenient. In March of this year, IU expressed discomfort over absurd rumors, stating through YouTube, 'There are too many anti-fans trying to criticize me forcefully. There were even claims that I am not Korean.'
IU's kind gesture during Chuseok, where she gifted staff gold and vouchers, has gained attention. She continues to show appreciation for her colleagues as she prepares for her role in the upcoming drama 'The Lady of the 21st Century' alongside Byung Wook, which explores a romance set in a modern Korean monarchy.
