Park Wi, the husband of Ji-eun from Secret and a YouTuber, posted security camera footage of an accident that occurred while getting off Korea’s high-speed train KTX, and after criticism poured in, he deleted the footage and apologized. However, even after the apology, the debate continues, with even the pure intention of releasing the footage being questioned. On the 22nd, Park Wi posted an apology on his YouTube channel, saying, “I am sorry for disappointing many people with the video uploaded today.” He said, “At the time the incident occurred, I could not consider the position of the staff member who did their best to help me on site and politely apologized.” He added, “I could only view negatively the mistake made in the process of trying to help me better.” He continued, “My way of expressing myself was immature, and my thinking was shallow,” and apologized. Before this, on the 21st, he had released a video titled “The reason for releasing the CCTV footage.” The footage showed Park Wi’s wheelchair, while he was recently getting off the KTX, catching on the foot of a social service worker who was on the slope, causing his body to be thrown forward. Park Wi explained the situation at the time, saying, “As I came down the slope, I suddenly saw a foot in front of me. The moment the wheelchair wheel caught on that foot, my body was thrown and I fell to the floor.” He then prefaced that the social service worker did not intentionally cause the accident, but said, “I was momentarily angry at the fact that the foot had been placed on the slope itself,” and revealed, “That person also apologized politely, but at the time it was hard to accept.” Park Wi cited the safety issue for wheelchair users as the reason for releasing the footage. He said, “Such a situation itself should not be able to occur,” and “For that, safety education is necessary, and I think more careful consideration for wheelchair users is needed.” However, after the footage was released, there were repeated criticisms online that Park Wi’s way of raising the issue had gone too far. The point was made that the staff member who caused the accident did not act intentionally, and that in a situation where they apologized immediately on site, releasing security camera footage on a YouTube channel with one million subscribers could place excessive burden on the person involved. Some internet users responded that, while they sympathized with the intent to raise a safety issue, “It is unfortunate to publicly emphasize an individual’s mistake.” As the debate intensified, Park Wi deleted the footage and then posted an apology. However, questions continue to arise about whether he directly apologized to the staff member afterward, and about what procedures were used to obtain and release the security camera footage. Park Wi was diagnosed as being fully paralyzed after an accident in 2014, and after rehabilitation he lives using a wheelchair, and he has been releasing content through YouTube about his daily life and improving awareness of disabilities. ・Former Secret member Ji-eun shares unseen wedding photos with fully paralyzed YouTuber Park Wi: “Relive the emotion of that day” ・Former Secret member Ji-eun marries fully paralyzed YouTuber Park Wi!
