Jisoo from BLACKPINK and Seo In-guk talked about their impressions of co-starring in Netflix's 'Monthly Boyfriend.' The work is a romantic comedy where Mi-rae (Jisoo), a webcomic producer tired of real life, experiences love through a virtual dating simulation. According to Netflix TUDUM, 'Monthly Boyfriend' ranked first in the global TOP 10 non-English series category and entered the TOP 10 in 47 countries worldwide. Furthermore, it recorded first place for two consecutive weeks in the TV and OTT integrated drama topicality ranking announced by Good Data Corporation's official platform FUNdex, showcasing its popularity. Jisoo and Seo In-guk ranked first and second, respectively, in the cast topicality ranking, receiving significant support from viewers. Jisoo portrayed Mi-rae, who steps into love again while carrying the pain of a breakup, resonating with many. Seo In-guk played two characters, the real-world Kyung-nam and the virtual boyfriend Koo Yong-il, captivating the audience. -- Among the reactions from viewers and those around you, what stood out the most? Jisoo: I received many comments saying they found the story more realistic than expected. Especially, the moment when Mi-rae, after experiencing the pain of past love, hesitated to step into a new relationship out of fear of an ending resonated with many. Some said Mi-rae's emotions and struggles felt like their own. I’m happy that the time spent facing Mi-rae was conveyed well. However, I also want to tell them not to dwell too much on past relationships. Seo In-guk: I found it interesting to see fans debating which character they preferred, Kyung-nam or Yong-il. Park Kyung-nam is gruff yet has a delicate side, while Koo Yong-il is more specific and outgoing, so I think both have completely different charms. I hope the audience can clearly understand that difference. -- How did you develop your characters with director Kim Jong-sik? Jisoo: Mi-rae is a character who heals her tired heart through the chance encounter with the service 'Monthly Boyfriend,' but she also gets hurt in the process. We discussed a lot about how Mi-rae overcomes that and moves forward again. We also talked about what emotions and thoughts Mi-rae has in each scene when facing Kyung-nam between reality and the virtual world. Seo In-guk: We first thought about the physical differences. Kyung-nam wears glasses and has a calm voice and way of speaking, while Yong-il has red hair and a brighter tone. This is my second time playing dual roles since 'Can I Love You Secretly?!', and it was really fun. Since the same actor plays both, it was necessary to create differences in appearance and voice tone, which was challenging. I worked hard to find the right balance, as going too far or not enough would not work. -- What are your impressions of each other and the atmosphere on set? Jisoo: Since it’s a romance, I thought chemistry with my partner was important, but Seo In-guk made me feel relaxed and was very considerate, making the shoot enjoyable. Before filming, we discussed together and exchanged opinions on each character's emotions while aligning our lines. We also creatively adjusted our costumes to match the changes in our relationship. Above all, Seo In-guk got along well with all the staff, and the set was always filled with smiles. I think that helped create better scenes, and he was someone I learned a lot from. Anyone who has worked with Seo In-guk would probably feel the same way (laughs). Seo In-guk: I think Jisoo has a lovely energy that brightens those around her. Thanks to her, the set was always full of smiles. During filming, we carefully discussed each scene and rehearsed together. She has many ideas, so I learned a lot during that process. -- What is your favorite scene in 'Monthly Boyfriend'? Jisoo: There are many, but the scene where Kyung-nam and Mi-rae confirm their feelings in front of Mi-rae's house on a snowy day stands out. I felt that the moment when Kyung-nam asks, 'Is changing such a bad thing?' is a crucial moment that changes Mi-rae's perspective. Of course, Kyung-nam's bold approach beforehand was also significant (laughs). There are many exciting scenes in the virtual world, but personally, I remember the real-life scenes more. Seo In-guk: My favorite scene is when Yong-il first appears. It was an impactful scene that reveals the dual role (laughs). Also, the scene where Mi-rae and Kyung-nam realize their feelings for each other was impressive, especially the moment when Kyung-nam, while drunk, collects bottle caps and Mi-rae can't help but laugh at him. -- What kind of impression would you like 'Monthly Boyfriend' to leave on viewers? Jisoo: I feel it’s a work that delicately portrays not only excitement but also realistic emotions. I would be happy if viewers resonate with it in their own way and it becomes a memorable piece for a long time. Seo In-guk: It has a very fresh and unique worldview, so I would be happy if it is remembered as a new genre of romantic comedy. -- For those who haven't seen the work yet, what would you like to highlight? Jisoo: It’s a piece where you can enjoy various dates in the virtual world while simultaneously following Mi-rae's real-life story. I think that even if you start watching casually, it will naturally develop into something you want to continue watching. I hope those who haven't seen it yet can relax and enjoy it. Seo In-guk: As I mentioned earlier, I hope you follow the fresh worldview and the story of Mi-rae & Kyung-nam. Also, I would like you to pay attention to the tension created by Koo Yong-il's appearance and the growth of the characters.
