A scalper who resold a BTS (BTS) ticket worth 110,000 won (about 12,000 yen) for 3 million won (about 340,000 yen) was arrested by the police. On the 16th, the Cybercrime Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency announced that it had apprehended Mr. A, a man in his 30s, on suspicion of conducting scalping transactions by using seven accounts belonging to family members and relatives, as well as macro programs. Mr. A is suspected of illegally reselling a total of 8,967 tickets, from performances by famous idols to sports games, and obtaining about 2.4 billion won (about 270 million yen) in unjust profits. As a result of the police investigation, it was confirmed that Mr. A had continued the crimes for as long as eight years, from September 2018 until this year. In particular, in 2019, after buying up BTS concert tickets worth 110,000 won, he resold them for 3 million won, making a profit of nearly 30 times. Also, last year, Stray Kids concert tickets were raised from 165,000 won (about 18,000 yen) to 2 million won (about 220,000 yen), and SEVENTEEN fan meeting tickets were raised from 110,000 won to 1.8 million won (about 204,000 yen) and sold. Tickets for Bruno Mars’s concert in Korea in 2023 were also traded at 1.2 million won (about 136,000 yen), about five times the face value of 250,000 won (about 28,000 yen). After learning in March of this year that the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency had apprehended 16 members of a scalping organization, Mr. A stopped his crimes and tried to destroy evidence by initializing his computer and mobile phone. However, during the police search of his home, a USB storing materials related to the crimes was found, and the materials were secured through digital forensics (the process of finding legal evidence useful for criminal investigations from document files and access logs stored on digital devices, etc.), which exposed his identity. A police official said, “Scalping transactions are crimes that deprive K-pop fans of official viewing opportunities, and they are illegal acts,” and added, “We will definitely apprehend the other suspects under investigation and thoroughly recover even the criminal proceeds.” • A woman in her 30s who illegally purchased 2,600 concert tickets, including BTS tickets, was sent to prosecutors... profits were 51 million yen • Ahead of BTS’s comeback performance... investigation to begin on suspicion of illegal resale of 105 tickets in a total of 4 cases
